We
often get asked many questions regarding the vinyls. Here are the
answers to some of the most common.
What
are the advantages of Vinyl over etches?
Many. The main
advantages of using Vinyls over etches are as follows:.
Easy
to use: If you can peel a sticker, you can use these vinyls.
The product and conversions are designed for all skill levels, and
to be as easy as possible. In fact, we think that anyone can use
these system.
Instant
results: Well,
more instant that brass etches anyway. You can have your coach finished
in about an hour. this means that you can have the model on your
layout, do some running, and still keep the wife happy by spending
time with her. Most importantly, your project won't be sitting in
a cupboard for months or years unfinished because you dread the
painting. Money well spent.
No Airbrushing
Required: For the majority of our vinyls, there is no painting
required. -
OO
Better conforming
to the donor coach: The vinyls will conform better to the donor
coach than brass etches, and if they do lift, you can simply use
an Hairdryer to re-sit them down onto the donor coach. Try that
with paint finished brass etches
Better
finished product: Ok, I know thats a big statement and
to be honest, if your a master of the Airbrush, and you have a few
weeks spare time on your hands, then I conceed that you will have
a better finsihed model. However, if your like me, and most other
modelers, and your scared stiff of the airbrush, not to mention
the cost of the kit required, and wonder how on earth your going
to do that complicated livery/line your model, then our pre-printed
overlays win hands down. I simply cannot airbrush better than a
computer can print, and I doubt that most people can either.
Cost
Saving: In most cases, using our overlays will offer a
cost saving against the combined price of etches, paints, transfers
etc, not to mention the time saved.
Realistic
Chance of finishing your project: This is especially true
of kits such as DC Kits, Bratchells Models, BH Enterpises etc. Many
people have said to me, and I include myself in this catagory, that
they get so far with the kit, usually build it, then they are unsure
how to paint it, and that expensive purchase sits in the cupboard.
However, we still go and buy more of these kits, and they join the
first one in the cupboard. A lot of money sitting in a cupboard
huh? With our vinyl overlays, this can be a thing of the past forever.
For most of the kits, you can now spray the cab end and roof, then
apply the overlays, meaning that kit actually gets where its supposed
to be, on the layout!.
Are
there any dissadvantages of Vinyl over etches?
Only one. Lack
of strength.
Can
your vinyls be weathered?
Yes. Weather
before or after applying the acrylic/varnish.
You
say that you have to file off some or all of the raised detail.
Why is this?
Unfortunately,
this has to be done to stop the vinyl lifting from the coach. This
is no different to brass etches. It is possible however, to attach
your own etched handles after, or use plastic strips to create guards
handrails etc.
I've
brought Brass Etches sides from X, can you do overlays to match
them?
Unfortunately,
due to other work commitments, I do not have the time to offer a
bespoke vinyl service.
I
see an overlay in OO that I want in N, why is this not listed in
N?
The designs
are easily scalable for both guages, but due to time constraints,
I now design for OO. If you want something in N gauge, please contact
me and I will make the N Gauge version.
Do
you do overlays for O Gauge?
No
